Mailman Mailing List Users Page
Deprecated. See info on new list above. October 2013
http://www.byrongliding.com/mailman/listinfo/gliding_byrongliding.com
(this address should be shown on the bottom of every email from the list)
To retrieve your password, go to the user page, then click on the “Unsubscribe or edit options” button, leaving the field blank. It will take you to the next page which has a password reminder option.
When you have your password, log in and it will show you the options listed below:
Mail delivery
Set this option to Enabled to receive messages posted to this mailing
list. Set it to Disabled if you want to stay subscribed, but don’t want
mail delivered to you for a while (e.g. you’re going on vacation). If you
disable mail delivery, don’t forget to re-enable it when you come back;
it will not be automatically re-enabled.
Set Digest Mode
If you turn digest mode on, you’ll get posts bundled together (usually
one per day but possibly more on busy lists), instead of singly when they’re
sent. If digest mode is changed from on to off, you may receive one last
digest.
Get MIME or Plain Text Digests?
Your mail reader may or may not support MIME digests. In general MIME
digests are preferred, but if you have a problem reading them, select plain
text digests.
Mobile users should probably select plain text.
Receive your own posts to the list?
Ordinarily, you will get a copy of every message you post to the list.
If you don’t want to receive this copy, set this option to No.
Receive acknowledgement mail when you send mail to the list?
Conceal yourself from subscriber list?
When someone views the list membership, your email address is normally
shown (in an obscured fashion to thwart spam harvesters). If you do not
want your email address to show up on this membership roster at all, select
Yes for this option.
Which topic categories would you like to subscribe to?
By selecting one or more topics, you can filter the traffic on the
mailing list, so as to receive only a subset of the messages. If a message
matches one of your selected topics, then you will get the message, otherwise
you will not.
Avoid duplicate copies of messages?
When you are listed explicitly in the To: or Cc: headers of a list
message, you can opt to not receive another copy from the mailing list.
Select Yes to avoid receiving copies from the mailing list; select No to
receive copies.

Mailing List Etiquette
(in answer to a request for a forum, 091215)
A forum or bulletin board may be handy for the club but this message list can function well if people understand how it works:
Replies go back to the list so everyone sees them. The idea of this is to encourage people to engage in a club-wide conversation.
DON’T bother replying just to say “me too” unless a discussion specifically asks for everyone’s opinion. If you have something valid to contribute to the conversation, do so.
Keep replies brief. Everyone has an opinion but no-one wants to read 3 pages of blurb. Also don’t add attachments unless really necessary as many people don’t want to download them – particularly if they’re on dial-up or mobile with limited bandwidth.
Remember the club (and email list) is about flying gliders. If your message is relevant to that, send it to the list. If not send it to your friends instead.
The advantage of an email discussion group is that the messages arrive in people’s inbox. They don’t have to visit a forum or bulletin board to read messages.

Letter from JD Dec 2009
I would like you to use this list productively as I am still seeing too many emails and replies appearing on this site that are primarily directed to just one person. Things like “Hey me too” or “Great one”, “That’s what I do” or “I hear you” etc. Also some members like to make silly comments to, I suppose, show off their special genius to all the others in the club.
I’d like to repeat EVERYTIME THAT YOU HIT THAT REPLY BUTTON IT GOES OUT TO 40 PEOPLE. Most of these are simply not interested in having their email address clogged with meaningless “chit chat”. Also Russell’s subtle, or is it not so subtle, point about deleting previous messages to save space still applies.
I heartily endorse emailers who are attempting to disseminate knowledge and give practical tips on flying to other members, or those who are seeking answers to a particular problem that they feel others might be able to help with, or to make an announcement of some sort to all. That’s what this site is all about!
If you wish to discuss the weather with your mate or want to work out the details of that next trip away then you should get their email address off the list and chat to them privately or even make up your own group list, like some of our members already do.

In a recent email you mentioned that anyone who wishes to be taken off the Club’s email list would be spared the more forum – oriented content (that tends to rapidly fill up the inbox), but that they would still receive important meeting minutes and committee notices.
What I see as an important function of the club’s email list is for the instructors and individual members to notify all of us about general safety issues and/or airworthiness issues of particular aircraft. Your recent email about the inaccurate airspeed readings of YHB’s ASI is a good example of the kind of information that I think should be received by all club pilots.
I would like to see our club’s email list to be used for such notifications which directly affect our membership and our flying situation and for a separate Club Forum email list to be established for those who wish to share that kind of ‘general aviation info’, humour, etc that is more appropriate for a forum.
Cheers,
Jerry
There are instructions on the club’s website about the option for a daily journal of the club’s email list.
I totally agree that it’s essential for all members to be informed of safety issues and the like, and therefore I *strongly* suggest that anyone who feels overwhelmed with reading several emails per day take this option.
Members may also follow some of the other options outlined about using for instance a Gmail account to advantage.
We already have more than sufficient email lists, and the task of maintaining them can become as onerous as does repeatedly answering the same questions and well-meaning suggestions.
The systems which are in place now have taken literally hundreds of hours to set up and refine, and are under constant revision. It would help the administrators enormously if members would read the instructions and if they are not self-explanatory either post to the list or better still post their questions on the site.
There is more information on the club’s gmail account, byrongliding@gmail.com – get the logins from JD or one of the other members.
Documents include a complete club membership list with contact details.
