Under the Volcano
In the caldera of the largest volcano in the southern hemisphere, on the most easterly point of Australia lies the beautiful town of Byron Bay. Long a haven for surfers, the once sleepy seaside village has blossomed into one of the most popular destinations for tourists both domestic and international, and is home to many famous personalities, an extraordinary diversity of culture, and the Byron Bay Gliding Club.
With its fleet of powered gliders (MotorFalkes, G109, Dimona H36) the club offers joyflights, trial instructional flights and courses designed to take the new pilot to solo stage in the shortest possible time.
Self-launching motorgliders embody the advantages of power aircraft combined with the inherent safety of sailplanes, and regularly soar the rugged ridges of Mt Warning and the cliffs below the historic Byron Bay Lighthouse. Each year members undertake the long flight to the Gulf of Carpentaria to soar the amazing Morning Glory
