Spitfires
The sounds alone are worth this video. BE SURE TO WATCH FULL SCREEN
I still love all of these (now old) airplanes, perhaps the real possibility of flying them for a time kept our spirits up.
Then the stories came back along the line, we knew of the gallant fight they made, but also the great numbers of pilots who died flying them. It added a sort of hallowed ground, hallowed aircraft to their silhouette.
We were well trained in their shadow. We knew the smell of aviation fuel, of burning oil, of death, yet we clung to the example of those who had gone ahead of us.
I think that deep reverence still lies within us and gets probed every time we see those planes again and hear those engines passing.
Oh we know the new jets are more powerful, faster, and technical marvels, but they do not stir us so. 16 Spitfires in One Flyby
