Radio Procedures

Some newer members are unfamiliar with radio procedures. Here are some of the radio procedures I use. Some pilots will no doubt have slightly different formats. The bottom line is that COMMUNICATING YOUR INTENTIONS is the important thing. Far better to sort out potential conflicts than to avoid transmitting because of angst over precise wording. Remember to speak slowly and end each transmission with “Tyagarah”

FREQUENTLY USED (NOT ALL) RADIO PROCEDURES

BEFORE TAXIING

“Tyagarah traffic, motorglider XXX taxiing for runway (23 or 05) for local flight, Tyagarah”

BEFORE ENTERING RUNWAY (LOOK BOTH WAYS)

“Tyagarah Traffic. Motorglider XXX entering and backtracking runway (23 or 05) Tyagarah”

LINING UP

“Tyagarah Traffic. Motorglider XXX lining up runway (23 or 05) Tyagarah”

ROLLING

“Tyagarah Traffic. Motorglider XXX rolling runway (23 or 05) (local flight, circuits or destination,) Tyagarah”

POSITION (TO LET OTHERS KNOW WHERE YOU ARE)

“Tyagarah Traffic. Motorglider XXX, Brunswick Heads (OR 5 nautical miles north of the field) 2000 feet southbound. Tyagarah” (Who you want to hear your call, who you are, where you are, how high you are and what you are going to do.)

INBOUND

“Tyagarah Traffic. Motorglider XXX, Brunswick Heads, 2000 feet, inbound for landing Tyagarah.” Note: Anytime the engine is off, the call is GLIDER XXX. A glider has right of way over powered aircraft.

IN CIRCUIT

“Tyagarah Traffic. Glider XXX on downwind, runway (23 or 05), full stop landing (or touch and go) Tyagarah. (If no other traffic in area, no other calls are needed. Make other calls on legs of circuit as required for separation. If no other traffic, the circuit call can be made on base.)

AFTER LANDING

“Tyagarah Traffic. Motorglider XXX backtracking runway (23 or 05) for local flight (or circuits.) OR taxiing to the gliding club.”

CLEAR OF RUNWAY

“Tyagarah Traffic. Motorglider XXX clear all runways Tyagarah”
